Three Strikes Law
Three strikes law is an effort by the legislature to limit the number of reoffenders in teh criminal justice system by designating certain crimes as 'strikes.' Once an individual has accumulated a certain number of strikes, the punishment for any felony arrest and conviction are increased dramatically. The three strikes system has been criticised for taking discretion away from the parties (judge, DA, lawyer), which in turn can cause a defendant to spend his or her life in prison for exceedingly minor crimes.
